If someone thought that the new GLB could take its place from the most popular compact SUV of the star brand, he was wrong. A completely new Mercedes GLA is here to reach the market with the aim of reediting the success of its predecessor with a more rugged vocation than ever and with the latest technological advances from Mercedes.
The first images of the new GLA already revealed a much more compact model than the GLB, arranged on an MFA2 II platform – Mercedes Front-drive Architecture – with the same wheelbase as the Class A – that is, shorter than that of the GLB – but with a higher suspension than its predecessor to clearly distinguish itself from it, something that was criticized in the previous generation of this model.
With a centimeter less in length, three more in width and ten more in height than before, this new Mercedes GLA is more robust, bulky and above all taller than the Class A and also than the previous GLA.
Exactly, it is 4.41 meters long, 1.83 meters wide and has a total height of 1.61 meters. The ground clearance is also considerable: 14.3 centimetres. This last feature is its main differentiating element because in the aesthetic section we find a model with some optical groups, some general shapes of the hood, the roof or the tailgate, much more similar to those of Class A and B of what It happened before. And the same goes for the interior.
This transformation of its dimensions has an impact on the interior of the new GLA having a greater amplitude but also allows it to boast a more colourful and technological aspect than before. In the first aspect, its chassis is key, of greater battle than the previous one, which will allow it to offer a greater distance at the height of the legs for the occupants of the rear seats and also a trunk 14 more capable, since it declares 435. In addition, as with the GLB, you can count on the longitudinally adjustable rear bench seat – in 14 centimetres – so that this volume can increase significantly maintaining the five seats.
Moreover, the new and accurate interior lighting and especially the complete equipment, with the MBXU multimedia system included, stand out in the cabin. Mercedes to this last element, the GLA offers complete connectivity with mobile devices as well as complete handling by means of voice commands with the famous assistant “Hey Mercedes”.
In the mechanical talk, the new generation of the GLA will be available with the latest gasoline and diesel engines with four turbocharged cylinders, accompanied by a double clutch transmission and optional all-wheel drive. The initial range starts with the GLA 200, equipped with a 1.33 turbo of 160 horses developed with Renault and continues with the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35, with 2.0 turbo engine of 306 horses. Later, the third GLA 220 petrol will also arrive with the 2.0 liters of 190 hp and the diesel GLA 200 d of 150 horses and 220 d of 190 hp. In its second commercial phase, this range will be completed with a hybrid variant called GLA 250 and that thanks to the 1.33 motor and another electric motor, will deliver 218 horsepower.
